Week 8

 1. What did you learn this week?

This week we learned more information about DNA, RNA, codon, and mutations. Codons are DNA or RNA sequence of three nucleotides that encode a particular amino acid. This is a chart that helps one to determine the different names, and start and stop codons. Along with this we did an activity about super hero's and creating our own. We learned that in this activity when we substituted a letter into the code, nothing happened and the man remained regular joe. When we inserted a letter in the coden, we created a super villain. Lastly, when we deleted a letter in the code we created a super hero.  All of these mutations can be both good and bad!

2. What parts did you find clear, which were confusing?

One thing that I found very clear about this lesson was the difference between DNA and RNA as DNA uses T and RNA uses U. One thing that confused me at first was the codon chart as seen above, but I have a pretty good understanding now!

3. How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?

We did two simulations this week during lab. In these we created our own base pairs and a mutation. These simulations can be a great tool to use in my future teaching, as they create a great visual for my students. They will be able to create their own DNA sequence and make their own mutations.

Here is an update of my fast plant!! :)

  1. Hi Hanna!
I like your definition of codons, I think that is very helpful. I was also very confused at first with the codon chart, and still am, but I am hoping to get a grasp on it. I also think the activities we did in class would be useful to use in a lesson when we are future teachers!

  4. Hi Hanna! I like how you included the codon chart in your blog post and how over time you gained a better understanding of how to use it! I agree with incorporating the simulations into our future teaching, especially for the upper-elementary students!

  5. Hi Hanna! I also understood the ideas between DNA and RNA and how it works and the different codes that create mutations! I really enjoyed reading your blog!
